How to read this page. Every figure below names its source and the month or period it refers to, and the prices are as of October 2026. We use official statistics (INE, the BOE), regulated tariffs, the transport operators' own fares and named market reports. We do not use crowd-sourced sites such as Numbeo as fact. Where we had to calculate something, we show the sum. Where we could not verify a figure, we say so instead of guessing. Checked on 6 October 2026.

Málaga is cheaper to live in than Madrid or Barcelona, but its rents have been rising for years and they now take most of a local salary. This guide answers the cost-of-living question with numbers you can check: a monthly budget for a single person, a couple and a family of four, built line by line from official statistics, regulated tariffs, the city's own bus fares and named rent reports, with the sum shown. It is written for people who live in Málaga or are about to.

How Much Does It Cost to Live in Málaga in 2026?

For the essentials, a single person renting their own one-bedroom flat in Málaga needs about 1,262 to 1,462 euros a month, and a couple about 1,474 to 1,674 euros, as of October 2026. A room in a shared flat brings a single person down to about 662 euros plus a share of the bills, and a family of four in a three-bedroom flat needs about 2,440 to 2,780 euros. Rent is most of it. These are our sums of the cited costs below (rent, electricity, water and waste, internet, food at home and public transport), not a survey of what people spend, and they exclude eating out, schooling and leisure. In Málaga the water line is a partial figure we could verify, so the real total is a little higher.

What Does a Monthly Budget in Málaga Look Like?

Each table below adds up the cited components for one household type, with the low and high ends of the rent band carried through. The ranges come from rent: everything else is a single cited figure. Every line is rounded to the nearest euro. Change any line to your own situation and the total moves with it.

Not included: school or nursery fees, extracurricular activities, private health insurance, a car, clothes, eating out and holidays. Each can add hundreds of euros a month, which is why this is a floor for the essentials, not a lifestyle budget. It is also why our Moving to Málaga guide gives a higher all-in figure of about 1,400 to 2,000 EUR a month for a single person: that one includes eating out a few times a week.

How Much Is Rent in Málaga in 2026?

Asking rent in Málaga city averaged 16.5 euros per square metre in September 2026 (idealista), up 3.9 percent in a year, which puts a 60 m² one-bedroom at roughly 890 to 1,090 euros a month and a 100 m² three-bedroom at roughly 1,490 to 1,820 euros. A room in a shared flat averages about 450 euros (idealista, June 2026).

These are the same figures as our renting in Málaga guide and the where to live in Málaga area pages, which break them down area by area. The renting guide also covers deposits, contract length, the agency fee (paid by the landlord) and the rent-update index. Budget against the asking price if you are signing a new contract: the official signed or declared figures include old contracts and every flat size, which is why they run lower.

How Much Are Electricity, Gas and Water in Málaga?

Expect roughly 104 euros a month for electricity on the regulated tariff, as of autumn 2026; water and waste come to at least 18 euros a month. Electricity and gas prices are national; water and waste are set locally.

Water, EMASA, fixed service charge (meter up to 15 mm)3.23 EUR a monthEMASA tariff, BOP Málaga no. 97 of 21 May 2024, the latest tariff EMASA links (we found no 2025 or 2026 revision)
Water, EMASA, per registered resident a month0.428 EUR per m³ for the first 2 m³, 1.063 EUR for the 3rd, 1.571 EUR for the 4th and 5thSame tariff; homes with no registered residents pay per dwelling, from 0.467 EUR per m³
Waste tax (new, from 2026)129.29 EUR a year on average before VAT; most homes 123.60 to 157.66 EURMálaga city ordinance as reported by El Español, 21 November 2025; the first bill, for half a year, arrives at the end of 2026

Gas is not in the budgets above because many flats in Málaga have no piped gas and run on electricity alone. If yours has gas, add the fixed charge plus your usage. The October 2026 gas tariff rose sharply: Real Decreto-ley 25/2026 capped the rise in the raw-material part at 35 percent and carries the rest forward to revisions from January 2027, so expect another increase then.

We could only cost part of the water bill in Málaga. EMASA charges per registered resident, so two people using 3 m³ each a month pay 3.23 euros fixed plus 2 x (2 x 0.428 + 1 x 1.063) = 7.07 euros, before the sewerage and treatment charges, the Andalusian water levy and VAT, which we could not confirm for 2026. The budgets therefore use about 7 euros for water plus about 11 euros for the new waste tax (129.29 / 12), 18 euros in all, and that is a floor: the real combined bill is higher. Registering everyone who lives in the flat (the padrón) matters here, because the cheap first block is per resident.

How Much Does Public Transport Cost in Málaga?

The EMT Tarjeta Mensual, unlimited city buses for a month, costs 23.95 euros in 2026, 40 percent off its full price of 39.95 euros. A 10-trip Tarjeta Transbordo costs 5 euros, 15 to 25-year-olds pay 13.50 euros a month, and children under 14 ride free.

The discounted EMT prices run from 1 January to 31 December 2026, funded by the state (Real Decreto-ley 17/2025) and the city. A new EMT fare ordinance that would raise the single ticket to 1.50 euros passed its initial approval in July 2026; we found no final approval. We could not reach the Metro de Málaga fare page, so metro fares are not listed here: check them on the operator's site.

How Much Do Groceries Cost in Málaga?

A useful official anchor is about 188 euros a month per person for food and non-alcoholic drink at home. That is our arithmetic from the INE household budget survey for 2025: Spanish households spent 5,626 euros a year on food, and the average household spent 35,101 euros in total against 14,066 euros per person, which means 2.5 people per household. 5,626 / 2.5 / 12 = 188 euros. It is a national average from 2025, so it does not capture local price differences, and food prices have kept rising since: they were up 2.3 percent in the year to August 2026 (INE consumer price index).

Where you shop moves the bill more than the city does. The consumer organisation OCU's 2026 supermarket survey (prices collected April to May 2026, published 25 September 2026) put the average household's spend on its basket at 6,602 euros a year and found that switching from the dearest to the cheapest shop in the same city saves 1,310 euros a year on average. OCU's press release names the cheapest places to shop (all in the Valencia region) and the dearest (in the Basque Country, Madrid and Catalonia), but not Málaga, and the full results are behind its paywall, so we do not quote a Málaga figure.

How Much Do Internet and a Mobile Phone Cost?

A bundle of home fibre plus mobile line costs about 38 euros a month on average in Spain, according to the telecoms regulator CNMC's household panel (Q4 2025 data, published June 2026); bundles that add pay TV averaged about 77 euros. The CNMC does not publish an all-in household telecoms spend, so treat 38 euros as the typical price of the bundle most people buy, not a ceiling. Prices are national, so they are the same in Málaga as elsewhere in Spain.

What Do Households in Andalusia Actually Spend?

Households in Andalusia spent 12,197 euros per person in 2025, the lowest of any Spanish region, against 14,066 euros for Spain as a whole (INE, Encuesta de Presupuestos Familiares 2025, published 25 June 2026). That is about 1,016 euros per person a month. It is a region-wide average that includes rural Andalusia and owners, whose housing is counted as an imputed rent, so it understates a renter's budget in Málaga city, but it explains why local wages and local rents are so far apart. Nationally, housing and its bills took 33.2 percent of household spending and food 16.0 percent.

How Fast Are Prices Rising, and What Is the Minimum Wage?

Spain's annual inflation rate was 4.9 percent in September 2026 on the INE's flash estimate (published 29 September 2026), up from 4.3 percent in August. In Andalusia the annual rate was 4.0 percent in August 2026, the latest month with regional data (INE). Energy is the main driver this autumn: the electricity bill above is about 28 percent higher than a year earlier, and the regulated gas tariff rose in October.

The national minimum wage (salario mínimo interprofesional) is 1,221 euros a month in 14 payments, 17,094 euros a year, from 1 January 2026 (Real Decreto 126/2026, BOE of 19 February 2026). Spread over 12 months that is 1,424.50 euros gross. Set against the budgets above, the minimum wage covers a room in Málaga far more easily than a one-bedroom flat, which is why flat-sharing is normal here well beyond student age.

What Do Healthcare and Self-Employment Cost?

If you work in Spain as an employee or are registered as self-employed, public healthcare comes with your Social Security contributions at no extra charge. Two figures matter to newcomers who fall outside that:

Private health insurance is common among expats, and it is required for some visas, but prices depend on age, insurer and cover, and there is no official average to quote.

What Do These Numbers Leave Out?

The budgets on this page are built from items that have an official or named price. Several real costs do not, so they are left out rather than guessed:

About Numbeo and similar sites. Cost-of-living sites built from user submissions, such as Numbeo, are crowd-sourced estimates: anyone can enter a price, there is no fixed sample, and you cannot see when each price was recorded. They can be a rough cross-check for things like a restaurant meal, but we do not quote them as fact, and if one disagrees with the figures above, the official figure is the one with a known source and date.

Cost of Living in Málaga: FAQ

How much does it cost to live in Málaga per month in 2026?

For the essentials (rent, electricity, water, internet, food at home and public transport), our arithmetic from official and named sources gives about 1,262 to 1,462 euros a month for a single person in their own one-bedroom flat, about 662 euros plus a share of the bills in a shared flat, 1,474 to 1,674 euros for a couple and 2,440 to 2,780 euros for a family of four in a three-bedroom flat. Prices as of October 2026. Eating out, schooling and leisure come on top.

How much is rent in Málaga?

A 60 m² one-bedroom flat in Málaga city is advertised at roughly 890 to 1,090 euros a month (idealista, September 2026, city average of 16.5 euros per square metre, up 3.9 percent in a year), and a room in a shared flat averages about 450 euros (idealista, June 2026). The median rent landlords declared to the tax office was 718 euros a month for the whole city (SERPAVI, 2024 contracts), lower because it includes older contracts.

How much are utilities in Málaga?

The average regulated-tariff electricity bill in Spain was 104.31 euros in September 2026 (FACUA), with VAT back at 21 percent from October 2026. EMASA water costs 3.23 euros a month fixed plus 0.428 euros per m³ for each resident's first 2 m³ (2024 tariff, still the latest), before sewerage, the regional levy and VAT. The new municipal waste tax averages 129.29 euros a year before VAT. A fibre plus mobile bundle averages about 38 euros a month (CNMC, Q4 2025).

How much is a monthly public transport pass in Málaga?

The EMT Tarjeta Mensual, unlimited city buses, costs 23.95 euros a month in 2026, 40 percent off the full 39.95 euros (Ayuntamiento de Málaga). A single ticket is 1.40 euros, 10 trips on the Tarjeta Transbordo cost 5 euros, the youth card is 13.50 euros a month and under-14s ride free. The discounts run to 31 December 2026.

How much do groceries cost in Málaga?

Spanish households spent 5,626 euros a year on food and non-alcoholic drink at home in 2025, about 188 euros a month per person (INE, Encuesta de Presupuestos Familiares, published June 2026). Food prices were 2.3 percent higher in August 2026 than a year earlier (INE). Where you shop matters: the OCU 2026 supermarket survey found an average saving of 1,310 euros a year between the cheapest and dearest shop in the same city.

What is the minimum wage in Spain in 2026?

The salario mínimo interprofesional is 1,221 euros a month in 14 payments, or 17,094 euros a year, from 1 January 2026 (Real Decreto 126/2026, BOE of 19 February 2026). Spread over 12 months it is 1,424.50 euros gross.

Is Málaga expensive compared with the rest of Spain?

Cheaper than Madrid and Barcelona, not cheap. Málaga city's asking rent of 16.5 euros per square metre (idealista, September 2026) is below Madrid (23.4) and Barcelona (20.1), but Andalusian households spent 12,197 euros per person in 2025, the lowest in Spain (INE), so rent takes a bigger share of a local income here. National prices such as electricity and telecoms are the same as anywhere in Spain.

Can I use Numbeo for the cost of living in Spain?

As a rough cross-check only. Numbeo figures are crowd-sourced estimates entered by users, with no fixed sample or date, so we do not use them as fact. This page uses official statistics, regulated tariffs, operators' fare pages and named market reports, each with its date.
