The short answer

On the Costa del Sol you can live for years in English, and many people do. Then the health centre calls, the comunidad de vecinos holds a meeting, the school sends a circular, or the electrician arrives, and English stops working. If you live in Málaga, Spanish is the language that turns errands into conversations. This guide is for residents: it compares every route in Málaga by price, hours and the date you have to act, because the most common mistake is not choosing the wrong course. It is missing the enrolment window for the cheap one.

What are the options for learning Spanish in Málaga?

There are five realistic routes in Málaga, and they differ more in timing than in quality. Public courses are cheap or free but have fixed intakes; private academies cost more but start any week.

OptionCost (2026)HoursWhen you can start
EOI Málaga€81.41 a year for a new student4.5 hours a week (annual) or 9 hours a week (one term)September or February; apply in May or January
Public adult-education centre (CEPER/SEPER)Free public course (confirm with the centre)Part-time, school yearFrom September; enrolment during the year if places remain

Private academy, evening groupFrom about €55 a weekAbout 3 hours a weekTermly or monthly
Private 1:1 teacherAbout €32 to €40 a lessonWhatever you bookAny day

Private academy figures are from the published price lists of three Málaga schools, checked in October 2026; most also charge a one-off enrolment fee of about €35 to €50. Public prices and dates are from the Junta de Andalucía and the EOI Málaga (links in Sources).

How does the EOI (Escuela Oficial de Idiomas) work for Spanish in Málaga?

The Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas are Spain's public language schools, with qualified teachers, a fixed syllabus and official certificates at A2, B1 and B2 that are valid across Spain. The EOI Málaga teaches Spanish for foreigners (español para extranjeros) in person only, at levels A1, A2, B1, B2.1, B2.2, C1.1 and C1.2. It is by far the cheapest structured course in the city, because Andalucía charges a single low enrolment fee rather than a price per hour.

There are two formats. The annual course runs September to June with 4 hours 30 minutes of class a week, morning or afternoon. The one-term (cuatrimestral) course doubles the pace to 9 hours a week, either September to January or February to June. For the February 2026 intake, A1 and A2 groups met at 09:00 or 11:15, with some afternoon and evening groups at higher levels. You must be 16 or over by 31 December of the year you start, and you take a placement test (prueba inicial de clasificación) for any level above A1 unless you already hold a certificate. Bring your passport and NIE.

If you live further down the coast, the EOI Fuengirola also teaches Spanish for foreigners and has published its 2026-27 timetables.

EOI Málaga: dates and fees for 2026-27

February 2027 round

Apply 7 to 15 January 2027

Admissions published 1 February, enrolment 2 to 5 February 2027 (Junta de Andalucía, BOJA 13 April 2026). Classes start soon after; last year they began on Monday 9 February.

September round

Applications ran 1 to 20 May 2026

Enrolment 1 to 10 July, leftover places from 1 September. Expect a similar May window for September 2027; the Junta publishes it in spring.

Fee, new student

€81.41 for one language

File opening €22.37 + course €50.09 + general services €8.95 (EOI Málaga fee table, 2026). Returning students pay €59.04. 10% off for paying online.

Discounts

50% off or free for some groups

50% for a general large family; free for special large families, disability of 33% or more, victims of terrorism or gender violence, and people receiving the Ingreso Mínimo Vital.

The number one mistake: missing the window. The EOI only takes applications within fixed dates, and Spanish places are tight once the year starts: for the February 2026 intake the EOI Málaga offered 80 A1 places but only 2 at A2 and none at B2.1. If you are a beginner, the January round is a real chance. If you are not, aim for the May round. Set a calendar alert for early January and late April.

Can I learn Spanish for free in Málaga?

Yes. The Junta de Andalucía runs a Spanish language and culture plan for people from other countries (Plan educativo de acercamiento al fenómeno intercultural y el conocimiento de la cultura y lengua española) at its adult-education centres, the Centros and Secciones de Educación Permanente (CEPER and SEPER). In Málaga city, CEPER Mediterráneo (Calle Mendívil, by María Zambrano station) lists Spanish for foreigners as part of its free course offer, and CEPER Huelin, on the Carretera de Cádiz side of town, includes Spanish in its programme. These are public courses with no qualification at the end, generally for people aged 18 and over.

Their big advantage is flexibility. For 2026-27 the Junta's calendar says that for these in-person plans you can enrol from 1 September until around 19 March 2027 whenever a centre has places, on top of the ordinary period in June. Phone or visit your nearest centre to ask about places and timetables, and confirm that the course is free when you enrol, as centres set their own groups each year.

Worth knowing: NGOs and some neighbourhood associations in Málaga also run free or donation-based Spanish classes for newcomers, often aimed at people with fewer resources. Offers change from term to term, so ask at your district's municipal social services office rather than relying on an old list.

How much do Spanish classes cost at a Málaga academy?

At a private academy in Málaga, the standard intensive course is sold as 20 lessons a week, where a lesson is usually 45 to 50 minutes, so about 15 hours of class. It typically costs €165 to €220 a week for one to four weeks, falling to about €115 to €155 a week on long bookings. Part-time evening groups of about 3 hours a week start at around €55 a week. Private one-to-one lessons are usually €32 to €40 each, cheaper in packs. Expect a one-off enrolment fee of €35 to €50, and sometimes a materials charge. (Published price lists of three Málaga schools, checked October 2026; one has already announced higher 2027 prices.)

The University of Málaga's international Spanish centre also runs a monthly in-person course: 4 hours a day, 80 hours, for €800, with groups of 8 to 10 and new courses starting at the beginning of each month in 2026.

What you pay for at an academy is flexibility and pace: small groups, start dates nearly every Monday, and timetables built around working adults. If you have a deadline, such as a job interview, a DELE date or a baby on the way and a paediatrician to talk to, an academy is the fastest route. Many also sell long intensive packages tied to the Spanish student visa; if you already live here on another permit, you do not need one.

How do I choose a Spanish school in Málaga?

Start with accreditation, then check that the timetable survives your actual week. The filters that matter:

Are language apps enough to learn Spanish in Málaga?

Apps are good for vocabulary and for keeping a daily streak, but on their own they rarely get adults to conversation. They train recognition (tapping the right answer) far more than production (saying what you mean, under pressure, to a real person). Use them as the daily five minutes around a course or an intercambio, not instead of one. The best mix for most residents of Málaga is something structured, something social and something daily.

DELE, SIELE or CCSE: which Spanish exam do I need?

It depends on why you need a certificate. All three are run by the Instituto Cervantes, and the dates and prices are the same in Málaga as everywhere else in Spain:

ExamWhat it isUse it for
DELEDiploma at one fixed level (A1 to C2), paper sessions on set dates; never expiresSpanish citizenship (A2 or higher), jobs, university
SIELEComputer-based test that scores you across levels; book a slot at an exam centre; certificate valid five yearsJobs and universities that accept it, when you need a result fast
CCSETest on the Spanish constitution and society, 25 questions in 45 minutes, in SpanishSpanish citizenship, alongside the DELE

SIELE Global costs €155 at Spanish university exam centres in 2026 (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid price list), and you can register until 48 hours before a session. For citizenship, the rules name the DELE, so SIELE is not the route.

Pass mark 15 of 25.

Where to sit it in Málaga: the main exam centre is the University of Málaga's Centro Internacional de Español (CIE-UMA), accredited for the DELE and authorised for the CCSE. DELE exams are held at the Pabellón de Gobierno on the Teatinos campus, and its 2026 DELE fees match the national table (A2 €138). It lists its next CCSE sittings as 29 October and 26 November 2026. Some private schools in Málaga are exam centres too. You register online through the Instituto Cervantes and choose the centre and date during registration; the full list is on examenes.cervantes.es.

Do I need the DELE A2 for Spanish citizenship?

Yes, in most cases. To get Spanish nationality by residence you must pass two Instituto Cervantes exams: the DELE at level A2 or higher and the CCSE. A2 is a basic level: you can handle everyday situations, short conversations and simple forms. If you already hold a B1 or higher DELE, it counts.

Budget €223 for the two exams at 2026 prices (€138 for DELE A2 plus €85 for the CCSE), before the nationality application fee itself. Book the DELE A2 early: it is offered more often than other levels, but registration closes weeks ahead and popular Málaga centres fill up. This is general information, not legal advice; check your own case with the Ministry of Justice or an immigration lawyer.

How do language exchanges (intercambios) work in Málaga?

An intercambio is a free swap: you help someone with your language, they help you with Spanish. In Málaga they come in three forms.

Make intercambios work: arrive with three things you want to be able to say this week (calling the landlord about the boiler, booking at the centro de salud, chatting at the school gate) and practise exactly those. On the Costa del Sol it is easy to end up speaking English all night; insist on the half-and-half rule.

How long does it take to become conversational in Spanish?

For an English speaker, comfortable everyday conversation (around B1) usually takes several hundred hours of study and practice, and most adults living in Málaga reach it in one to two years of steady part-time effort. For comparison, the US Foreign Service Institute puts Spanish in its easiest group for English speakers and plans about 30 weeks of full-time training, 23 class hours a week plus self-study, to reach professional working proficiency.

Living in Málaga helps less than people expect, because the coast lets you live in English. What speeds it up is daily contact you cannot avoid: phoning instead of emailing, ordering at the counter, joining a neighbourhood activity, and reading local news in Spanish once your level allows it.

Most adults living in Málaga get there in one to two years of steady part-time effort. The US Foreign Service Institute plans about 30 weeks of full-time training for Spanish to reach professional working proficiency.

Are language apps enough to learn Spanish?

Not on their own. Apps build vocabulary and a daily habit, but they train recognising answers more than speaking. Pair an app with a course, a tutor or a weekly intercambio so you actually practise saying things to real people.

Is the EOI free in Andalucía?

No, but it is very cheap. At the EOI Málaga a new student pays 81.41 euros for a full year of one language in 2026 (returning students 59.04 euros), with 50% off or free places for some groups. The free option is the Junta de Andalucía's Spanish plan at public adult-education centres.

When do I apply to the EOI in Málaga?

For Spanish courses starting in February 2027, apply from 7 to 15 January 2027; admissions are published on 1 February and enrolment runs 2 to 5 February. For September courses, applications ran from 1 to 20 May 2026, and the Junta publishes the 2027 dates in spring.

Do I need the DELE A2 for Spanish citizenship?

Yes, unless you are exempt. Nationality by residence requires the DELE at A2 or higher plus the CCSE test, both from the Instituto Cervantes. People whose nationality of origin is that of a Spanish-speaking country are exempt from the DELE but still take the CCSE. In 2026 the DELE A2 costs 138 euros in Spain and the CCSE 85 euros.

When is the next DELE A2 exam?

The next DELE A2 you can still book is Friday 12 February 2027, with registration closing on 7 January 2027. The 2027 calendar also has A2 sessions on 2 April, 22 May, 9 July, 10 September, 15 October and 13 November (Instituto Cervantes, checked October 2026).
