Good Friday - April 3

Good Friday is one of the biggest days of Semana Santa in Malaga, with eight brotherhoods processing through the city: Descendimiento, Amor y Caridad, Monte Calvario, Dolores de San Juan, Santo Traslado, Piedad, Sepulcro, and Soledad. Each has its own unique route and schedule, filling the streets from afternoon until well past midnight.

Descendimiento Procession (16:30 - 00:15)

The major procession of the day. The Descendimiento (Descent from the Cross) departs from Casa Hermandad and winds through the city, passing through Maestranza, Cervantes, Paseo de Reding, and more. Key timing: the procession reaches the Tribuna at 19:20, Torre Sur at 21:25, and the Cathedral at 21:35. Expect it to wrap up around midnight.

Santos Oficios (17:45)

The Bishop of Malaga will celebrate the Santos Oficios (Holy Offices) at the Parroquia de San Gregorio VII in Iznate. Afterwards, he'll return to the city to preside over the Santo Sepulcro procession route.

Rosemary tradition: If you missed Thursday's rosemary blessing, you might still find blessed sprigs around the city. This year, six tons of fresh rosemary were laid out as a carpet along the city center streets for the procession of the Virgen de la Esperanza. Locals collect the blessed sprigs after the Virgin passes - a beloved Malaga tradition.

Torremolinos Procession (19:00)

If you're on the coast, Torremolinos has its own Good Friday procession starting at 19:00 from the Parroquia Madre del Buen Consejo. The procession features a newly crowned Jesus Nazareno carried by about 100 men, and the restored Virgen de los Dolores carried by 105, with two accompanying bands. The route winds through the town center and finishes around midnight.

Expect crowds: Malaga's bars are reporting strong sales this Easter Week, with a surge of national tourists despite AVE disruptions. The city center will be very busy, especially around procession routes in the evening.

Holy Saturday - April 4

Easter Vigil at the Cathedral (22:00)

The Bishop of Malaga, D. Jose Antonio, will preside over the Easter Vigil at the Catedral de Malaga at 22:00. This is his first Easter in Malaga since assuming his position. The vigil marks the transition from Holy Saturday into Easter Sunday with traditional liturgical ceremonies.

Holy Saturday is generally quieter than the preceding days - a pause between the intensity of Good Friday and the celebrations of Easter Sunday. A good day to explore the city without the procession crowds, or to visit one of the villages nearby.

Easter Sunday - April 5

Easter Mass (10:00)

Easter Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 in Santa Rosalia-Maqueda, marking the culmination of Holy Week.

Resucitado Procession - Antequera (10:30)

The historic town of Antequera (45 min north of Malaga) concludes its Holy Week with the Resucitado procession at 10:30, starting from the Iglesia Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion. The route winds through the town center - a beautiful setting for the final procession.

Bishop's Public Easter Message (13:00)

At 13:00, the Bishop will deliver a public Easter greeting in the atrium of the Cathedral, following the passage of the Resucitado procession. Open to everyone.

Resucitado Procession - Velez-Malaga (16:00)

Velez-Malaga wraps up its Semana Santa with the Resurrection procession at 16:00, departing from the Iglesia de San Juan. The route passes through Plaza de las Carmelitas, Plaza de la Constitucion, and other central streets. A lively, celebratory end to the week.

Easter Monday - April 6

Cristo de la Buena Muerte - The Legion at the Port (10:00)

This is one of the most iconic moments of Semana Santa in Malaga. The statue of the Cristo de la Buena Muerte will be disembarked at the port by the Spanish Legion at 10:00. This year, the military vessel "Galicia" makes its debut - the first time this ship has been used for the landing. The Legion then parades the Christ figure through the city center to Plaza Fray de Santo Tomas, accompanied by the singing of "El Novio de la Muerte" (The Bridegroom of Death), the Legion's famous hymn. The streets fill with silence and devotion as the procession passes.

Don't miss this one. The Legion's procession of the Cristo de la Buena Muerte is widely considered the most emotionally powerful moment of the entire Semana Santa in Malaga. Even if you've watched processions all week, this is different. Arrive early at the port area - it draws massive crowds.

Esperanza Blessing Ceremony

Running concurrently with the Legion's procession, the Esperanza Blessing Ceremony takes place at the Tribuna de la Plaza de la Constitucion. The Nazareno del Paso receives the traditional blessing - a deeply moving moment in the city center.

Santa Cruz Procession

Follow the Santa Cruz procession through the streets of San Agustin, Granada, Plaza de la Merced, and Madre de Dios. This year the Virgin debuts a new headdress made of antique tulle embroidered with gold thread, pearls, and gemstones. The departure from the parish and the closing are the most intimate moments.

Tolox - Jesus Nazareno (06:30)

In the small mountain village of Tolox (near Ronda), an early-morning procession departs at 06:30 featuring a newly embroidered tunic of fine gold and purple velvet. The 18th-century image is carried on a mahogany throne through the village streets - a quieter, deeply traditional experience far from the city crowds.

Day Trips and Villages

El Paso de Riogordo - 75th Edition (Apr 3-4, 17:00)

One of the highlights of Easter in the entire Malaga province. El Paso de Riogordo is the oldest sacred representation in the Axarquia, and this year marks its 75th edition. Around 600 local residents reenact 17 biblical scenes in an outdoor setting of over 8,000 square meters called El Calvario, starting at 17:00. The performance lasts about three hours and can seat over 6,000 spectators.

Tickets: Adults EUR 10, Seniors EUR 7, Children 6-12 EUR 7, Under 6 free. Riogordo is about 45 minutes from Malaga city.

El Paso de Cajiz (Apr 3-4, 11:30)

In Cajiz (near Velez-Malaga), you'll find what's considered the oldest Passion play in all of Andalusia. Over 200 amateur actors - mostly locals - perform 36 biblical scenes in a natural outdoor setting. Uniquely, this is the only Passion play in Andalusia that includes the Resurrection scene. The texts date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Declared of Tourist Interest by the Provincial Council.

Arriate - Jesuistas Procession (Apr 6, 22:00)

The village of Arriate (near Ronda) hosts a distinctive Holy Week recognized as a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest. The night procession of Jesus Nazareno at 22:00 features the unique division between "cristinos" and "jesuistas" - two groups that define the village's identity during Easter.

Ronda too: If you're heading to Arriate, nearby Ronda has its own powerful Holy Thursday Vera Cruz Procession from the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, featuring the Legion and the Ecce-Homo brotherhood. Thousands attend.

Supermarket Hours

Hours vary by store and location this Easter weekend. Here's the general picture for Good Friday:

StoreHours (Good Friday)

Lidl09:00 - 21:30 (varies)

Transport Changes

Metro Strike

Metro de Malaga has been running partial strikes during Semana Santa. The most recent strike day (Holy Thursday) saw 90% participation from workers with the metro operating at 60% capacity between 18:00-21:00. Minimal disruptions were reported, but some crowding occurred on Line 2.

Check for any additional strike days announced for the weekend - the labor dispute is ongoing, with workers pushing for a new collective agreement.

AVE Disruptions

High-speed AVE train services to and from Malaga are experiencing disruptions this Easter Week. If you're planning train travel, check Renfe for the latest schedules. Despite this, the city is still seeing strong tourist numbers - most visitors are arriving by car or plane.

Procession Route Adjustments

Some procession routes have been modified due to the metro Line 2 expansion works. The Nueva Esperanza brotherhood, for example, is exiting towards Martinez Maldonado instead of its usual route to avoid construction on Eugenio Gross.

The Balcony Culture

If you've ever wondered why certain apartments in Malaga's center command premium prices, Easter Week is the answer. Watching processions from a balcony is a deeply rooted tradition, and demand for properties with procession-route views is rising. Some of the best seats in the house are in private homes overlooking streets like Larios, Carreteria, and the Cathedral area. If you know anyone with a balcony on a procession route, this is the week to visit.

Inclusivity Initiatives

Malaga is making strides to make Semana Santa more accessible this year:
