The city of Málaga has 14 public holidays in 2027: 12 for all of Andalucía, set by the Junta's Decree 84/2026 (BOJA, 5 May 2026), plus 2 local days set by the Ayuntamiento, Thursday 19 August and Wednesday 8 September.
Andalucía moved two Sunday holidays to the Monday, so Monday 1 March (Andalusia Day) and Monday 16 August (the Assumption) are days off. Only 1 May and Christmas Day fall on a Saturday, which leaves 12 weekdays off. The no-leave long weekends are 1 January, 1 March, Holy Week (25 to 28 March, four days), 16 August, 1 November and the 4 to 6 December weekend.
Every date below is confirmed in an official source. Easter Monday is not a holiday in Andalucía.

San Juan (24 June) is not a holiday in Málaga, even though the beaches fill up the night before. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are ordinary working days, although many offices close early.
Long weekends and puentes in Málaga in 2027
Andalucía's choice to move two Sunday holidays onto Mondays gives Málaga more long weekends than most of Spain in 2027. Here is every holiday that falls on a working day, and what it does to your week.
Every holiday on a working day, and what it gives you
- Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January: a 3-day weekend (New Year's Day), no leave needed.
- Wednesday 6 January (Epiphany) is a midweek holiday: a single day off, with no long weekend unless you add two days of leave.
- Saturday 27 February to Monday 1 March: a 3-day weekend (Andalusia Day), no leave needed.
- Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 March: a 4-day weekend (Holy Thursday and Good Friday), no leave needed.
- Saturday 14 to Monday 16 August: a 3-day weekend (the Assumption), no leave needed.
- Thursday 19 August (Incorporación de Málaga) is a puente day: take Friday 20 August off and you get 4 days, Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 August, for one day of leave.
- Wednesday 8 September (Virgen de la Victoria) is a midweek holiday: a single day off, with no long weekend unless you add two days of leave.
- Tuesday 12 October (National Day) is a puente day: take Monday 11 October off and you get 4 days, Saturday 9 to Tuesday 12 October, for one day of leave.
- Saturday 30 October to Monday 1 November: a 3-day weekend (All Saints' Day), no leave needed.
- Saturday 4 to Monday 6 December: a 3-day weekend (Constitution Day), no leave needed.
- Wednesday 8 December (Immaculate Conception) is a midweek holiday: a single day off, with no long weekend unless you add two days of leave.
The best-value stretches of leave
These are calculated for someone who works Monday to Friday and gets every holiday on this page off. Check your own contract and collective agreement before you book anything.
- Friday 1 to Sunday 10 January: 10 days off for 4 days of leave (4, 5, 7, 8 January). New Year and Three Kings joined up: four days of leave around the Epiphany Wednesday buys ten days.
- Saturday 20 to Sunday 28 March: 9 days off for 3 days of leave (22, 23, 24 March). The whole of Semana Santa. Holy Thursday and Good Friday are holidays in Andalucía, so three days of leave covers the week of processions.
- Saturday 14 to Sunday 22 August: 9 days off for 3 days of leave (17, 18, 20 August). Mid-August: the Assumption moved to Monday 16 August plus the 19 August local holiday, the anniversary the Feria is built around.
- Saturday 4 to Sunday 12 December: 9 days off for 3 days of leave (7, 9, 10 December). The December puente: Constitution Day on Monday and the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday.
Holidays that fall on a weekend in 2027
Andalucía's decree moves two holidays that fall on a Sunday in 2027 to the following Monday: Andalusia Day (Sunday 28 February, observed Monday 1 March) and the Assumption (Sunday 15 August, observed Monday 16 August). Two more fall on a Saturday and are not moved:
- Labour Day falls on Saturday 1 May.
- Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December.
If you work Saturdays, as many people in retail and hospitality do, the Saturday holidays are still days off for you.
Málaga city's local holidays in 2027
The Ayuntamiento de Málaga approved its two local holidays for 2027 at the full council meeting in May 2026, and they are listed on the council's holidays page:
- Thursday 19 August: the Incorporation of Málaga into the Crown of Castile, the 1487 anniversary the Feria de Málaga commemorates. A puente day: take Friday 20 August off for a four-day weekend.
- Wednesday 8 September: the Virgen de la Victoria, the city's patron, with the procession of the image back to her sanctuary. A midweek day off.
The Junta de Andalucía also publishes every municipality's local holidays together in the BOJA; the dates above are the ones the city decided.
Working outside the city? Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Rincón de la Victoria, Alhaurín de la Torre and the other towns around Málaga each choose their own two local days. Your local holidays are those of the town where you work.
What about school holidays?
Schools close on every public holiday on this page, but term dates, the Easter and Christmas breaks and any extra non-teaching days are set separately by the Junta de Andalucía's education department and the provincial education office, and individual schools can add a few days of their own. Do not plan childcare from the public holiday list alone: use your school's own calendar for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 term dates.

What is open and closed on a public holiday in Málaga?
A public holiday in Málaga runs much like a Sunday. Exact opening hours vary by business, so treat this as a guide and check the places that matter to you the day before.
- Government offices are closed. The town hall, the foreigners' office (Extranjería), the police stations that take NIE and TIE appointments, the social security and tax offices: none of them offer appointments on a holiday. If you are hunting for a cita previa, holiday weeks have fewer slots.
- Banks and post offices (Correos) are closed. Cash machines work as normal.
- Shops: in the historic centre and around the port many shops open, as they do on Sundays. In residential neighbourhoods most shops close, and supermarkets vary, so shop the day before. Bakeries and small convenience shops usually open in the morning.
- Bars and restaurants mostly open, and holidays are busy eating-out days for local families. Book a table for lunch, especially on long weekends.
- Public transport runs, usually on a Sunday or holiday timetable with fewer services. EMT Málaga buses, the metro and Cercanías trains all keep running.
- Health care: your health centre (centro de salud) is closed for routine appointments, but hospital emergency departments are open 24 hours, and every area has a duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia). The rota is posted on the door of any pharmacy.
- Museums and sights often open on holidays, but many close on 1 January and 25 December. Check the official website before you go.
How public holidays work for residents
How many holidays does a worker in Spain get?
Spanish labour law caps paid public holidays at 14 a year: up to 12 national and regional days, fixed each year in a decree by the regional government, plus 2 local days chosen by each town hall. All 14 are paid and you do not have to make the hours up. That is on top of your annual leave, which is at least 30 calendar days by law.
Local holidays follow where you work, not where you live
The two local days belong to the municipality where your workplace is. If you live in Málaga but your office is in Torremolinos, you get Torremolinos's local holidays, not Málaga's. Schools and public offices follow the local holidays of the town they are in. This trips up a lot of newcomers who commute across a municipal boundary.
Sunday and Saturday holidays
Spain does not automatically move a holiday that lands on a weekend. Each regional government decides, in its yearly decree, whether to move a Sunday holiday to the Monday. A Saturday holiday is normally not moved, so Monday to Friday workers simply do not gain a day. If you do work Saturdays, as many people in shops and hospitality do, the Saturday holiday is a day off for you.
If you have to work on a holiday
Hospitals, transport, hotels, restaurants and many shops work through every holiday. If you are one of those workers, your collective agreement (convenio colectivo) sets the compensation, usually extra pay or a day off in lieu. Check your own agreement or ask your employer; it varies by sector.
Freelancers (autónomos)
If you are self-employed, nobody gives you the day off, but your clients, your gestoría, the tax office and the social security office will all be closed. Deadlines that land on a holiday generally move to the next working day for official procedures, but do not count on that for private contracts.
Planning tips for residents
Holy Week is the big one
Holy Thursday and Good Friday are both holidays, and the city centre is given over to the processions all week. Three days of leave (22 to 24 March) gives you nine days off. If you are staying, expect street closures in the centre every evening from Palm Sunday; if you are leaving, book early.
Watch the 1 March Monday
Andalusia Day falls on a Sunday in 2027 and is observed on Monday 1 March. Schools and public offices are closed that Monday, which catches out people who only look at 28 February.
August is a short month for paperwork
Between the Assumption on Monday 16 August, the 19 August holiday and the Feria, mid-August is a slow time to get anything done with an office. Get appointments and paperwork out of the way in July.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are working days
Neither is a public holiday. Many offices and shops close early, but your employer is not obliged to give you the day. In 2027 both fall on a Friday, so taking them as leave turns each into a long weekend.
